There has been a hospital on this site since the 1860s. During the First World War it was a war hospital for wounded soldiers. In 1921, it became a hospital for mentally ill patients again. The NHS took over the hospital in 1948, when it was given the name St. Nicholas Hospital. The site is now made up of a mix of Victorian and newer buildings.
