Information for referrers for the adult autism diagnostic services for people living in the Northumberland, North Tyneside, Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and South Tyneside.
The service is for adults over the age of 18 years who have a registered GP in Northumberland, North Tyneside, Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and South Tyneside and require an autism assessment.
The service does not provide ongoing support and advice for adults who already have a diagnosis of Asperger’s or Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Consider referral for assessment for possible autism when an adult’s life is significantly affected by one or more of the following:
- Persistent difficulties with interpersonal relationships
- Persistent difficulties in communicating with people socially
- Resistance to change or restricted interests
Exclusion driteria:
- A person under the age of 18 years
- A person who already has a diagnosis of Asperger’s or Autism Spectrum Disorder (either in childhood or by way of private assessment)
There is an open referral system. We accept self-referrals as well as referrals from health or education professionals.
Please ensure that the individual is aware of and consenting to the referral.

The referral will be reviewed by our clinicians who may contact you for more details. You will receive confirmation of our acceptance or rejection of the referral by post.
