The Forensic Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (North East and North Cumbria) is a joint partnership between Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust and Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust.

The service will support the national ambition to reduce numbers of inpatient admissions and lengths of stay; reduce variations in service availability and access and improve the experience of patients, families and carers using mental health services.

The service delivers forensic consultation, assessment and in some instances specialist intervention and treatment across the area to young people up to the age of 18 years with forensic mental health needs.

The team is available to agencies who have contact with young people in the youth justice system or whose behaviour is such that it requires support from a forensic specialist service.

The specialist service supports young people up to the age of 18 years with or without criminal conviction across a range of settings.

The service is open to young people who:

  • are under 18 years at the time of referral
  • have or are suspected of having a mental disorder (including neurodevelopmental disorder)
  • are deemed to require inputs by a specialist service in a multiagency context
  • are considered to be in conflict with the criminal justice system and at high risk of perpetrating person centred offending
  • require an appropriate secure setting
  • are currently residing in a secure setting

The service is community based and will work with young people and their professional group to support transitions both into and out of secure care (hospital settings, secure welfare environments and custodial settings).

Referrals are accepted from any agency/ professional working with a young person who has concerns in relation to high forensic needs or young people transitioning in or out of secure services. It is essential that a care coordinator/ lead professional is identified who will retain overall responsibility for the case throughout the involvement of Forensic Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.
