Case studies
When Darren was admitted, he’d been smoking for 28 years. He had managed to quit 12 years ago for a year – but following changes in his life, he’d begun smoking again.
Whilst on the ward, Darren met with Wayne, the Tobacco Treatment Advisor. After they discussed it, Darren decided he wanted to try to stop smoking again.
He found it really helpful having someone to talk to every week to help him stay smokefree. And he says that not being able to smoke on the ward was really important in helping him to stop smoking. Darren says he received ‘outstanding service’ and was so pleased someone came and talked to him about the harms of smoking and the benefits of quitting.
He’s found it particularly satisfying having his carbon monoxide reading checked each week, and watching the levels drop to a safe, healthy level!
John had smoked for over 45 years, starting when he was 17 years old. When he was admitted to hospital, we supplied John with a vape and nicotine replacement therapy patches.
He’d tried to quit before, but without any support these attempts had failed. Tobacco Advisor Lisa helped John try again to quit following a 12-week programme – and this time, he was successful!
John said, “It was better this time. Having Lisa come every week and support me helped. Lisa made sure I had what I needed.
